The repository maintains an up-to-date inventory system

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) contracts with MRI to operate a repository that supplies standard reference-grade compounds for cancer research. The goal of the repository is to provide well-characterized reference standard materials, analytical data, and health and safety information to the carcinogenesis research community.

Midwest Research Institute

MRI operates the Chemical Carcinogen Reference Standard Repository,
which supplies unlabeled and labeled standards of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), PAH metabolites, aromatic amine metabolites, and other compounds
of interest.

To effectively serve the carcinogenesis research community, the repository is required to:

  • Synthesize or procure chemical samples
  • Provide for their safe and stable storage until requested by users
  • Repackage the chemicals to meet user needs
  • Ensure the uniformity of all samples
  • Ship samples to users along with the appropriate analytical documentation and safe handling instructions.

All of these operations are performed in a safe manner and in compliance with current NIH, IATA, OSHA, NRC, and DOT requirements.

The Repository

The repository maintains an up-to-date inventory system that makes it possible to
keep a current balance of all stocks and to project future needs. Of importance, comparable to that of the major goal of the repository, is the task of ensuring the safe handling of these dangerous materials at all steps in their processing. The equipment and handling procedures used in this program have been selected to ensure the minimum hazard to personnel and the environment, from synthesis, receipt at the repository, to receipt by the user. All shipments are made in conformance with transportation regulations.

Shipments made from the repository are sent by commercial air freight.
Although most of the compounds stocked by the repository are known
carcinogens, some are not. Many may still be controversial, at least in regard
to their effect on humans. However, to stock both carcinogens and noncarcinogens and to provide for different handling, packaging, and shipping procedures for each, leaves many opportunities for error, leading to possible exposure, mislabeling, mishandling, or accidental release of carcinogens to the environment. Therefore, all compounds entrusted to the repository are regarded as potential carcinogens and are handled, packaged, and labeled accordingly. This is not necessarily meant to imply that the sample is a known carcinogen--only that it is intended for use in research involving chemical carcinogens, and unless the recipient has contrary information, the chemical should be treated as a carcinogen with proper safety equipment and practices.

The repository provides data sheets for the compounds in stock, which include
information concerning chemical and physical properties, analytical data, hazards, storage, and handling.

Section 1 lists over 1,000 unlabeled chemicals available from the NCI Chemical Carcinogen Reference Standard Repository at MRI. These chemicals are organized by chemical class, alphabetically, and by CAS number. Some classes are specific
(e.g., benzo[a]pyrenes, benz[a]anthracenes), while others are broad (e.g., aromatic amines, pharmaceuticals). Chemicals are organized alphabetically within each class. A complete list of all the classes and their location in the section are provided in the table of contents. An alphabetical list and a CAS number list of chemicals are provided after the chemical class list in Section 1.

Section 2 lists the labeled compounds available.

Terms and Conditions of Sale

Prices

All prices listed in this catalog are in U.S. dollars and include shipping and handling charges. Every effort will be made to give reasonable notice of price changes, but the repository reserves the right to change prices without notice. Prices listed do not include any government tax or fee, and these are not listed on the invoice. The purchaser assumes responsibility for any applicable tax.

International Shipments

The actual cost of shipping per order will be assessed for shipment outside North America. Repository orders are shipped by Federal Express and Airborne Express/DHL.

Rush Shipments

An additional charge of $50.00 per order will be added to any rush shipment. Rush orders will be shipped the same day, if possible, or within 24 hours of receipt of the purchase order and required paperwork.

Vendor Designation

Purchase orders for labeled and unlabeled compounds should designate Midwest Research Institute as the vendor/contractor for the source of materials and origin of the resulting invoice as follows:

NCI Chemical Carcinogen Reference Standard Repository
c/o Midwest Research Institute
425 Volker Boulevard
Kansas City, Missouri 64110-2299

Chemical Unit Cost

Standard unit amounts have been designated for the chemicals in our inventory.
For compounds where the unit amount specified is 5 mg or less, a nominal weight
unit is intended, and will depend on the amount of material available as well as the
difficulty in weighing small quantities. Unless otherwise requested, orders for
intermediate quantities will be filled with multiples of the standard package sizes.
Quotations for substantially larger amounts of most compounds can be provided
upon request to Ellen Zaika, National Cancer Institute, Carcinogenesis Cancer Etiology Branch. Email: zaika@mail.nih.gov.

Payment

Terms are net 30 days from the date of invoice.

Make Checks Payable to "Midwest Research Institute," P.O. Box 803308, Kansas City, MO 64180-3308. Visa and Mastercard are accepted (U.S. orders only).

Licensing and Registration

Compliance with the terms of institutional, state, and national regulations for the
procurement of radioactive materials is the responsibility of the purchaser. Users
of radioisotopes should familiarize themselves with all applicable regulations.

In the United States, the use and possession of radioactive materials are governed by regulations issued by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and published in the Federal Register in Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 30. United States federal regulations require that a copy of a customer's license, together with all amendments, be on file at the contractor's office (Midwest Research Institute, Kansas City, MO) before shipment of radioactive material can be made.

Delivery

Every effort is made to ensure prompt processing and delivery of orders; however, no responsibility is assumed for delay or nondelivery by the carrier. Normal domestic delivery, for items in stock, is 4 to 10 days from receipt of an order. In order to avoid storage under improper conditions resulting from delays in transit, chemicals are not shipped Thursday through Sunday.

Notice Regarding Usage, Toxicity, and Hazards

The repository chemicals are offered for laboratory EXPERIMENTAL USE ONLY. They are not for human food, drug, cosmetic, or household use. All of the compounds will bear the warning "CHEMICAL CARCINOGEN." This is not necessarily meant to imply that the sample is a known carcinogen -- only that it is intended for use in research involving chemical carcinogens, and unless the recipient has information to the contrary, it should be treated as a carcinogen.

may sustain or incur as a result of any claim by the purchaser, its agents, officers, employees, successors, assigns, customers, or other persons in connection with the use of the products furnished hereunder.

Return Shipments

The repositories will NOT accept return shipments unless prior permission has
been given by the respective repository and the repository has provided shipping
instructions. It is our policy to be fair and equitable. We will attempt to cooperate
with the purchaser, but the circumstances involving returns are often complicated
and unique to individual purchasers which require individual attention and specific
handling. Unidentified returned shipments may be discarded in light of our quality
control standards. In the event that a complaint relating to the quality of a product
is deemed by us to be valid and justifiable, then, at our option, we will either replace the quantity free of charge or issue a credit for the quantity in question. We want you to be satisfied with these compounds and to have confidence in them. We include an analytical data sheet with each order to inform you of the estimated purity and a material safety data sheet to advise you of special handling precautions. If you encounter specific problems with any of our compounds, please let us know. We will be happy to provide technical assistance and information with respect to synthesis techniques, or usable processes, solvents, and analytical techniques. In general, the user should consider all of the repository compounds as sensitive to light (particularly short wave ultraviolet), heat, and oxidizing agents.
