Using RF communication, the Symbol Technologies-based system allows immediate, real-time inventory updates whenever new chemicals are received or created. The Symbol Technologies wireless palmtop scanner, configured with CIS Chemical Inventory Systems software from ChemSW, is carried on a belt clip along with a label printer. Operators can scan an arriving chemical into the inventory and label it immediately.

The palmtop device has its own IP address, for a web-based link to the inventory database.
