Marketworks' Managed eCommerce Solution Enables Vodafone to Sell End-of Line Stock More Profitably

Mobile phones are high fashion as well as high tech products. Vodafone's handset range changes every quarter, leading to an ever-increasing tail of products. The level of depreciation is fast - a phone on sale for $150 at launch will typically command just $70 only three months later.

Vodafone needed a new way to move less fashionable handsets quickly with maximum returns. Vodafone has now introduced the Marketworks Managed eCommerce solution and sells up to 3000 handsets a week via eBay direct to consumers.

Marketworks provides their ecommerce platform, IT and marketing expertise and support, with Royal Mail handling the logistics, including the warehousing. The items are shipped off to the Royal Mail warehouse and held until there is a winning bidder. Then they're picked, packed and dispatched, with a Vodafone invoice.

Using eBay, Vodafone is seeing purchase prices double that achieved via the spares market and higher than experienced through retail outlets: purchase prices now achieve 60 to 70 percent of cost price. Furthermore, the handsets are generating extra revenue through airtime usage.
