All assets of the school and
school library media center are to be physically verified or accounted for with
annual inventories as directed by the district.
Two categories of inventory
exist each under the supervision of a different school system departmental
agent. As media specialists, our roles are the same in the print and non-print
HORIZONS category but may be vastly different from school to school in the area
of capitalized property.
- HORIZONS - Library Technical Services
For print and non-print
materials that are entered into the county online cataloging and circulation
system, HORIZONS, the media specialist has full responsibility for completing
the electronic scanning process under the supervision of Library Technical
Services. For those items found in older collections that are not yet entered
into the system, a database or manual card system needs to be used.
- Capitalized Equipment and
Software - Property Control
Florida
State Statute 274, requires that all tangible and intangible District School
Board (DSB) property (equipment, computer software and audiovisual materials)
valued at $1,000 or more must be inventoried
annually. The School System of Hillsborough County requires in addition
that items of $200 or greater be included as well. Property Control, with their
ON-LINE FIXED ASSETS SYSTEM, supervises this process. In addition, the
Hillsborough County Public Schools assigns the responsibility for sharing this
task to the Property Custodian of each school who is
generally, the principal or a site administrator.
The focus for media specialists
is most often the audiovisual equipment and non-print collection circulated to
teachers and managed by the media staff within the school (whether housed in the
media center or long-term in the classroom).
