Industry Development and Models: The RFID Ecosystem for the Retail Supply Chain

The hype about radio frequency identification (RFID) for the retail supply chain is starting to reach a fever pitch, but exactly what RFID solutions for the retail supply chain will look like and who the vendors will be that deliver them is yet to be determined. In this IDC study, we present a working model for the RFID ecosystem for the retail supply chain. The most important aspect of this model of this emerging ecosystem is that the RFID layer is only the foundation of an RFID-enabled solution.

The success of RFID for the retail supply chain will depend on how well companies adapt their business processes to take advantage of real-time supply chain visibility and, in turn, revamp their supporting enterprise applications and integrate existing systems with the RFID layer. Today, IT vendors are still making sense of this market, and established companies are competing with and partnering with start-ups with specific RFID technologies. It is too early to tell which will emerge as leaders in this nascent market, but this document maps companies to the RFID ecosystem for the retail supply chain to provide the perspective necessary to assess players in the future.
