GIS for the Lighting Engineer
Penmap provides a complete
field GIS data collection system that allows the engineer to have in a small
field unit the complete record of all the lighting stock that he is responsible.
This system allows for both the survey of new stock and the maintenance of
existing lights.
Identify and record Lighting Faults
Due to Penmaps ablity
to store large databases of Street Lighting information the user can take the
complete inventory into the field and record faults and generate instructions to
maintenance crews. These work tickets can be recorded and even generated on site
and can include digital photographs to record physical damage to assets.
Recording lighting condition at night
Because
streetlights need to be inspected at night to check if they are functioning
correctly, this presents several safety isues to the inspector. Driving a car
and operating a computer is not safe and would require constant stopping to
enter data. To solve this problem Penmap has added a voice recognition system
which allows the inspector to record a bulb being out by just saying the word
?#8364;˜Bulb?#8364;™. When the computer hears the word Bulb it asks a GPS receiver where it is
and automaticallly calculates which streetlight in the database is closest to
the inspectors position. A work ticket is then automatically generated and the
inspector has not had to take his eyes off the road or hands off the wheel. If a
difficult conjustion of lights needs to be recorded then the inpector does have
the option of stopping and selecting the lights manually.
User Configurable Databases
In Penmap you are the expert
in your field, and you decide which data to collect. All databases are
configurable by the user. Fields, Databases, Symbols, Layers, and all of the
Buttons and Icons are completely configurable by the user without having to do
any programming.
Import and Export Directly to GIS
Existing data
collection systems require coding on the data collectors, these codes must then
be converted into the GIS system. Penmap uses exactly the same data structures
and data sets that are used on the GIS. This allows for two-way seamless data
communication.
Recording Data Onto Existing Background Maps
Penmap's
ability to hold a detailed digital map of an entire city has been found to be
especially useful for highway inventory. This means that when an inspector goes
to the site, he can have immediate access to any part of the city map. Being
able to use the background detail from the digital maps and not having to
remeasure existing items of detail reduces the quantity of data that has to be
collected.
